Surf Rock Reviews

Drifting Sand - Surfin' with Britney: Full of energy, fun and tongue in cheek. Not to be taken too seriously (I think) Sexy, surfin', slightly surreal with sea star surfin' with Britney, Surf with Me, Optimistic, upbeat and fun. Go get it!

Vivisectors - The Vivisectors produce what surf rock should be. Rhythm, coolness, beat and energy. Dick Dale and Burnette should be concerned. This one man band gets into the groove on each and every turn he turns out. If your sick of being disappointed in surf rock CDs, you need to get this one. Surf all day and surf rock all night with this ripper.

The Capacitors - groovy, space age meets traditional. Cybersurfing thru the galaxy, reaching new waves and rockin all the way, all day, and all night. This surf rock is groovy in any planet's language!

Ralph Rebel-Sabre Jet:(6) Very energetic song, more roots rock than surf, but good nonetheless. Sounds kinda like Peter Gunn meets Let's Go Trippin'. Not much tank, sounds more like room reveb.

The Boss Martins-Continetal theme:(8) fast smooth nice feel good reverb sound, but not Totally drippy, good mix between the organ and guitar.

The Supertones-Side Slippin':(5)Kinda Aqua Velvets sounding, very Spanish-south of the border, needs a bit more reverb, maybe less delay but cool anyway.

The Volcanos-Bad News:(9) Outstanding Cover here-Lot's of fun feel to it. Good mix over all, maybe a little deeper drums.

The Coffin Daggers-Stella Vista:(8)Nice Melody-kinda bluesy-Davie Allen sounding fuzz or distortion goin' on. Wonder how it would sound just clean?

The Krontjong Devils:(6)Interesting melody line, very garagey/surf sounding,Probably why it hasn't been released before,
but sparked my interest for sure.

The Supertones-Shanghai Surf:(9)Sounds like spaghetti western meets Oriental music, good recording, almost a shadows sounding song.

The Penetrators-Codename Gypsy:(10)Perfect surf sound,What a band. Love the feel of this song, good mix on the sax half way through the song.Sounds like gypsy music meets Madness(ska).

The Retroliners-Caught in the Undertow:(5) BASS in your face(I like that alot).Wish the guitar had more Reverb. It's got a jazzy- crime show feel to it. a little repetitive.

Big Ray and the Futuras-Surf Hammer(live):(7) Very garagy/RnB sounding, Lots of shake your booty feel to it. Nice lead break at the end. Drums are a little dry.

The Supertones-The Sweet Ride:(8)Definetly sweet sounding,Very smooth glissando slides. Good drippy sounding guitar, nice surf song

The Krontjong Devils-The Rafter:(9)Agressive and Jammin'(the way I really like it).Better Mix on this one.Dare I say perfect mix for all the Instruments.

The Honkeys-The Wayback Machine:(7) Very spooky-Biker/horror sounding lead meets surf rhythm guitar.Nice creepy Organ in the Back-ground.

The Apemen-Pogo A Gogo:(7)What happened to the bass frequencies? hardly there, hollow sounding.Cool double guitar parts,Average surf sound.Quick pace to it.

The Supertones-Sand Pumper(live):(6)Got that mid 60's go-go sound to it.Fair mix for live recording,Seems a bit sloppy, but it might supposed to sound like that.

The Boss Martins-Malaguena:(9) Love that Drip,Very nice recording of this cover song.Bass drum and Bass guitar could be a little higher in the mix, but it's a fast laid back kind of feel, so it might be right.

Ralph Rebel-James Bond:(8)A Way Cool Version of this spy theme-The Mix sounds kinda compressed, but nice mix between the instruments

The Penetrators-50 Bucks a Midget:(7)These guys definetly know how to get different feeling songs, kinda 60's go-go meets surf sound#19 Estrume'n'tal-Sol Si Do Si Mi Re La:(5)Whoa!! What is this??Must be one of those Brazillian surf/punk bands.Lot's O'ENERGY, very distorted guitar, but it's got a happy upbeat theme to it.

The Footstompin' Trio-Bullseye:(5) Been wonderin'what this band sounds like. Reminds me of the Ren and Stimpy theme. For a hick sound like this,it'd be nice if he lost the distortion.

The Coffin Daggers-Avenue X:(7) Link Wray LIVES!!Down and Dirty, Raw instro, rockin' blues sound, then the Organ takes it kinda Tellstar Territory?

The Krontjong Devils-The World We Knew:(7) Very Euro sounding, Like the Acoustic Lead over the Reverb Chords.Wish it wasn't so Demo sounding quality.

The Supertones-The Wet Set:(7) Snappy song here,It's got that quirky organ in it.Wish the Guitar was more wet like the title says.

Big Ray and The Futuras-Horroscope:(6) Very good up beat surf song, could use another guitar to help fill out the sound a bit, Drums sound a bit dry

The Honkeys-Good/Evil:(8)Like Satan's Pilgrims meets Davie Allen Very fast-good feel to it.Dig the Hell out of the spooky organ.

The Footstompin Trio-Run Chicken Run/Rawhide'63:(7) Why when bands do Link Wray, do they have to distort the hell out of the guitar? He never sounded this heavy/bad. But they do play the hell out of these 2 songs.

The Supertones-1000ft Rd.:(6) just another so-so surf song, sorry not much to say other than maybe needs more reverb.

The Del Vamps-Apollo:(8) For a Garage/surf band this isn't a horrible song. Like a teen attempt at a Harlem Nocturne, good sound mix.

The Retroliners- Step Lively:(7)Another Go-Go type song, would have been really cool with some organ to go with it. Too dry a guitar sound.

Johnny and the Shamen-It's So Easy:(6) There is some serious Reverb for ya WOW!!Now if the song wasn't so goony sounding. Is itsupposed to be an instro version of the Buddy Holly song? Nice Lead breaks, but the Main line is lame, sorry

Estrume'n'tal-Bolero:(8) Another Blast from these foreign guys Lots of energy-cool melody line and good crunchy rhythm under it. Wonder how it would sound done by a surf band?

The Untamed Youth-Sea & Shore:(8)So Smooth and sweet, almost like Tellstar. Fair mix,a little stuffy sounding on the high freqs. but cool version of this song.
