The Honky Tonk Man
Interview: 1998 Approx.
Q: First off, what are your views on DX and the whole World Wrestling Federation for that matter, has McMahon taken wrestling to a higher or lower level?
Honky Tonk Man: It is appealing to a different crowd, the young teens and young hell raisers.
Q: Give us your opinion on ECW.
Honky Tonk Man: Too extreme, too many guys getting seriously injured. That stuff appeals to a very small market.
Q: Will we ever see Honky Tonk Man return to the ring as a wrestler?
Honky Tonk Man: No, Not for WWF. They have let over a year of my ability to help them slip away. Besides, I'm not one of Ross's boys from the old NWA, such as Mero, Vader, Simmons, Windham, Doc Hendrix, RR Express, Cornette, Dustin, Cactus, Austin, should I go on?
Q: Can you explain what happened a few years back about you and Mero or "Johnny B. Badd"?
Honky Tonk Man: I was programed w/him under the impression I was take the TV title at Halloween Havoc and it didn't happen. I was told it would happen at Jacksonville on the TBS Clash show, didn't happen. So it was to happen at the Dec. PPV in Nashville, and they gave me the ending that wouldn't happen again. All along I was on a nightly deal, just trying to play ball to get a "good deal" ( in the words of Bishoff, but it didn't happen either, so I said I can't go down unless I'm given something like everyone else here. Bluntly, Eric said we can't use you if you don't want to go with the program, so I got my bag and caught a cab out.
Q: Who is a better employer? McMahon or Bischoff.
Honky Tonk Man: Both in their own way of doing things.
Q: Have you ever been contacted by Paul Heyman?
Honky Tonk Man: No
Q: Would you work for Extreme Championship Wrestling, or do you look at this company as a disgrace to the business?
Honky Tonk Man: I would work it, but I can't get quiet as extreme as some of the guys, but I guess when you bust a guitar on someone's head, that is pretty extreme.
Q: When and where did you first hear about Pro Wrestling?
Honky Tonk Man: Memphis, as a small child watching the Nick Gulas promotion on TV.
Q: Did you ever have any backstage heat between anyone in the business and who?
Honky Tonk Man: Of course, I have heat now with a lot of management and wrestlers. You can't be loved by all. I'd rather keep the names out.
Q: Besides yourself, who do you see as The greatest IC Champion ever?
Honky Tonk Man: Michaels was good, Warrior carried the torch from me pretty good, and so was Rude.
Q: I've heard rumors of you talking to WCW. Is that true?
Honky Tonk Man: I have had some informal contact with them, I always like to have options if at all possible.
